Jeff's adventures with Craiglist Killers

In all honesty, I’ve sold zero items on craigslist, and used either OfferUp or LetGo for almost all of these sales. I had better luck with OfferUp overall, and recommend it if you’re looking to buy or sell something.

Before leaving Virginia we sold a desk with a chair, couch, paddleboards, surfboard, roof rack, and a mattress and box spring set. Cara also sold her wedding dress and some other dresses at a consignment shop, but that really doesn’t lend itself to a good story.

The first thing we sold was actually Cara’s snowboard, but that was so uneventful its hardly worth mentioning. I sold the paddleboards via Facebook in about 2 hours, and the only funny part of that was watching the buyer try to put an 11 foot paddleboard in a Trailblazer with half the middle seat still up because there was a kid in a carseat in it, and the look of surprise when it didn’t fit. I met a kid to sell him the roof rack I had bought for my old car and he just kept asking if it would fit his civic without buying anything else, and then wanted to “try it” without paying me, so I was a little worried he would try to put it on his car and just drive off. I really should try to see better in people…

The mattress and box spring were eventful exchanges because the first time someone came to buy it, they brought a flair side F150 with a cap on the bed, and were shocked when the box spring didn’t fit. They came back later with a bigger truck, and I hope they made it back across the HRBT before the rain started… The couch was also a very uneventful sale, they came over, gave me some cash, and left with a couch. Everybody wins!

The surfboard was a pretty good story just because if you imagine a 25ish surfer dude with a beat up station wagon and who just seemed to be living life as it came to him, you’d pretty much see the guy that bought it. Flip flops, tank top, board shorts, a tan despite it still being early spring, and a fanny pack that he had all kinds of junk in, including a wad of cash that got sorted out to pay for the surfboard. Hopefully he catches some waves and enjoys the ride of life…

Now the only really good story was selling the desk. I set up the meet for a Walgreens parking lot close to our house, and got there before the buyer arrived. I stood the desk up in the back of the truck and set the chair in the parking lot, and stood by to wait. A beat up old minivan rolls in and parks next to me with two very large women in the front seats. The younger woman in the driver seat got out of the car, but based on the very loud conversation, it was clear that the passenger was the one buying. I asked if she wanted to look at the desk, and she just handed $40 out the window and said it looked good without even turning to glance at it. The driver immediately sat down in the desk chair and watched me load the desk into the back of their van (which was full of other junk), and only got up when I asked if she was going to put the chair in the car. That clearly wasn’t happening… After I loaded the desk and chair for them and said “Have a nice day,” I got in my car and was spending a few seconds updating the desk as sold online, and they started driving away, which is when it got odd. They pulled about half way out of their parking spot, and then backed up, which made me nervous. The driver than yelled at me, “Have you heard about Prince?” which I heard, “Have you heard about prints?” So I thought she wanted to print some photos or something (we were still at Walgreens), and I was really confused. After a few back and forth exchanges, I figured out that she meant the artist Prince. I was then informed that he had died that day, and that this lady was a big fan. She “Didn’t know how to feel about it.” Shortly after we established that she was a big Prince fan and that he had died, she told me to have a nice day and drove off. I sat for a few moments trying to figure out what had just happened, and why I seemed like someone that needed to know she was a Prince fan, gave up and drove home.

Clearly none of these people tried to kill me, but I still recommend meeting people in public places. Who knows who you will meet from the wide world of the internet?

Working out without a gym

We've been doing CrossFit for so long, its going to be really weird to not have consistent access to a barbell for the next year. We've come up with a few things to do while we're hanging out in Ohio at my parents house, and so far we're at least not acting like we normally do on vacation and not working out at all.

Friday we did a quick one, 4 rounds of 50 double unders and a lunge-lunge-squat combo down the length of the driveway. Saturday we did death by 10 meters, and Cara got through 14 rounds, and I failed just shy of finishing 15. Definitely not our best efforts, but a decent baseline for what we have going. Cara also did a super official measurement of 38 of her feet being 10 meters so we can lay this out in the future.

Today we got to have some fun because I bought a rope right before Virginia. I took a truck full of stuff to the CHKD thrift store near our house the morning we were leaving town, and there was a ~30 foot rope out front of the store so I bought it. Cara was a little upset when I came home with something, but I think she got over it when we used it today. I hung the rope in a tree in my parents yard and we did: 5 rounds of 2 rope climbs, 15 pushups, and a run down the road and back, roughly 400m with a decent hill. I took 16:46 and Cara did it in 19:00.

Hopefully the fun times continue!

The Rough Schedule

We have a pretty good idea of where we’ll be for the next few months; here is the best outline we have:

May 19th-23rd we’ll be in Ohio with Jeff’s parent

May 24th-28th – Michigan with Cara’s parents

May 29th & 30th – Chicago seeing Cara’s brother and friends

May 31st – Madison visiting college friends

June 1st – Minneapolis visiting college friends

June 2nd-6th – Bismarck ND to visit college friends

June 7th – Milwaukee to visit college friends that we will travel to Finland with!

June 8th-10th – Ohio with Jeff and Cara’s parents

June 11th-18th – Maine to see Cara’s aunt and uncle

June 19th-20th – Iceland! First international destination…

June 21st-27th – Finland

June 28th - July 3rd – Sweden

July 4th-11th – Scotland

July 12th-August 11th – housesitting in England

August 12th-September 6th – WWOOFing in Ireland

September 7th-21st – Germany and Italy with Jeff’s parents

September 22nd-October 10th – Greece

October 10th – Fly to Tanzania….

October is the latest that we have solid plans. We’ll likely spend about a month in Africa, and then be moving onto southeast Asia for about a month each in Thailand and Cambodia, maybe going to spend some time in Vietnam. We’re planning on spending a week or two in Japan before heading off to Australia and New Zealand sometime around February/March of 2017. Cara’s parents are planning on meeting us in Australia and we’re hoping to WWOOF for about a month in New Zealand. After that we’re planning on going to Peru to see Machu Pichu and possibly go to Bolivia and Ecuador as well, depending how we’re doing financially and how much longer we want to be on the road. If all goes well, this should put us back stateside around May of 2017, and we’re hoping to finish off our trip, rendezvousing with the OV crew in the Bahamas.

Where do you want to come meet us?

The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step

Unemployed. Career break. Finding ourselves. Quitting. Change of pace. Funemployed. Whatever you want to call it, we're doing it! No take-backsies. I've started this blog post hundreds of times in my head over the past few months and each time it turned out different...

1 year ago at our wedding, my dad toasted us and told me that marriage would be the biggest adventure of my life. Turns out, Dad was right. Although, I don't think Jeff or I could quite comprehend the extent of the adventure at the time. The fact that we are in a situation that allows us to actually take a trip around the globe is not lost on us. We realize we are extremely blessed and we are so thankful for the opportunities that have presented themselves.

Recently, we've been called, 'brave' and 'courageous' and told that we have major cajones. I don't feel brave or courageous, but I'll take the cajones as a compliment! I appreciate these comments because what I am feeling is a little bit of fear. Mostly fear of the unknown. Jeff and I are creatures of routine, and we pretty much just threw that out the window. But more than losing our routine, I fear the regret we would have if we didn't take a chance on something that is going to be challenging, rewarding and the story of a lifetime.

Quitting my job was not hard. Selling and donating many of our things was not hard. Packing up what we had left was not hard. Driving through the HRBT (in tunnel traffic) one last time was not hard. Leaving our best friends and the family we created in Virginia was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I know it's not goodbye- you can't get rid of us that easy! To all of the people in Virginia that have touched our lives: Thank you. A million thank you's. We wouldn't be the people we are today without your love and encouragement. And to our families and friends who weren't there day-to-day with us in Virginia: your support means the world to us. I wish I had more eloquent words for all of you, but I'm getting emotional thinking about how wonderful our lives are because of the amazing people we have in our lives.

In the coming months we plan to take everyone who reads this blog on a trip around the world. You are about to discover our deepest, darkest secrets and learn more about us than you want to. We will probably talk about feelings. And eventually, Montezuma's Revenge. To those of you who stick it out to the end (besides our mother's), hopefully you get the unedited version of our future autobiography turned motion picture starring Julia Roberts as she 'finds' her self in an Indian ashram. I'm getting ahead of myself...

Get excited! The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step...

Just Got Real...

This whole thing has seemed like some grand dream that we just talked about over beers with our friends. Until now. Cara and I just put in our 4 week notices at work, which makes this whole adventure a lot more real. So far we have a pretty good plan for our USA roadtrip starting mid-May (including: Geneva, South Lyon, Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, Bismark, and Milo) and we fly out of Boston mid-June. Then its off to Iceland, Finland, Sweden, London, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Tanzania. Hopefully we're still having a blast after that and it should put us well into October, and then it will be off to southeast Asia where we can live for cheap and really experience some new cultures. Soon we'll add some more details on where we are actually headed and roughly when, so if you want to meet up somewhere around the world let us know!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole adventure, even after telling work we're leaving it doesn't seem like its actually happening. The next steps are to keep selling the things we don't need when we get back (anyone want a computer desk or a love seat???) and finalize our packing lists. I will be the first to admit that I own way more stuff than I need or use, but the thought of narrowing down the essentials to survive for a year out of a backpack is a bit daunting. I think one of the interesting things will be to compare what we leave home with and what makes the whole trip and comes back with us.

This is going to be one grand adventure, and I can't wait for it to really start!
